On Sri Lanka’s quiet, sun-baked south coast near the fishing town of Tangalle, Amanwella lies amid 37 acres of coconut trees next to a crescent of golden sand. Combining modernist lines and indigenous materials, the resort is inspired by the work of famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Away from the palm-shaded private beach club and the 47-metre pool, the area’s diverse attractions – from tea plantations to treks and temple visits – capture the island at its most authentic. Identical in design and layout, each of the 28 suites features floor-to-ceiling glass and lattice panels opening on two sides to a private courtyard, a terrace and a six-metre plunge pool. Flooded with light, all suites range along a hillside facing the Indian Ocean, with Premium Ocean Suites providing the finest views. Large sliding wooden screens divide the airy interiors into a combined sleeping and living room and a sumptuous bathroom. Some of the suites can be connected to accommodate larger groups or families. Amanwella is situated around 190km south of the capital, Colombo, and 80km east of Galle (home to Amangalla). The seaside town of Tangalle is Amanwella’s nearest community, around 3.5km east along the coast.
