First, travel back in time by visiting the various parts of Old Quebec. Visit Place Royale (2-4 Rue des Pains Benits), browse the boutiques of Petit Champlain, and in the winter, stop to sample a local delicacy of hot maple syrup poured over snow and rolled into a naturally sweet confection.

The brisk air is making you crave something warm, so your next stop is Le Chic Shack (15 Fort) for classic Canadian comfort food. Here they offer gourmet versions of diner favorites, so you opt for a housemade blood orange soda, their Classic Poutine and the addictively salty/sweet Maple and Pepper Chips. Now pleasantly full of potatoes and melty cheese curds, you're ready to venture further.

Next you take a "fresh look at the human experience" by visiting the Musee de la civilisation (Museum of Civilization, 85 Rue Dalhousie). This innovative institution offers an ever-changing array of exhibits alongside permanent ones, and is a place that engages people of all ages and backgrounds. You spend a good deal of your time viewing the "People of Quebec . . . Then and Now" exhibit, which tackles Quebec's long and fascinatingly diverse history.

Having met with your English-speaking guide, you're ready to head twenty minutes north along the riverside to the oldest pilgrimage destination in North America: Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre (10018 Ave Royale). Dedicated to Saint Anne, Jesus' grandmother, this important site has welcomed millions of visitors over the past 350 years. Inside the immense cathedral, you look up to the soaring vaulted ceilings, glimmering mosaics and stained glass windows with their soft, diluted light.

On the way back into town, you stop and rest awhile at the Joan of Arc Garden, created in 1938 by landscape architect Louis Perron. Located within the Plains of Abraham historic site, this rectangular garden is uniquely set below ground level and blends both French and British styles in its display of more than 150 species. Your love of history lures you further into the park, where a pivotal battle between the French and British took place during The Seven Years War.
